Sex / Gender Definitions from National PFLAG

Sex:  the physical and biological differences that differentiate between male and female.

Gender:  the behavioral, cultural, or psychological traits typically associated with one sex.  Some activists believe we should be talking about gender rights because it is more inclusive of all who are affected by our society's rigid gender roles than is the term "transgender."

Gender Expression:  one's external presentation in manner of dress and appearance regardless of biological sex.

Gender Identity:  a person's internal sense of being masculine or feminine, man or woman, boy or girl.

Sexual Orientation:  one's sexual and affectional attraction for others who may be of the opposite sex, the same sex, or either sex.

Transgendered:  applies to many types of gender expression, including, but not limited to:

'Butch’ (or mannish) women:  gender expression does not tend to follow the "traditional" female role.

Cross Dressers:  gender expression occasionally differs from their birth sex.

Drag Kings / Queens:  enjoy expressing opposite gender characteristics either for performance or for fun.

Post-Operative Transgendered People:  have already had gender reassignment surgery

Pre-Operative People:

"FTM" (female to male) persons have made, are making, or will make a change from female to male.
"MTF" (male to female) persons have made, are making, or will make a change from male to female.

Transgenderist or Non-Op Persons:  live full time in a gender different than their birth sex with no desire to pursue surgery; sometimes also without hormone therapy.

Intersexed Persons:  are born with either a genetic sex difference from their outward appearance, or with genitalia that are not clearly either male or female.

There are also people who don't identify with any gender.  Since gender is a social construct, they contend we should stop adhering strictly to two-gender definitions.
