2008 Scholarship Information and Application

Each year the Brewster and Falmouth chapters of PFLAG (Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender People) offer a scholarship for a student who has shown leadership and courage in standing up for the rights of all people to be treated with respect--regardless of sexual orientation.

For the past several years, we have offered a $3000 scholarship, and we continue this offer for 2008. Applications are available from the Guidance Departments of Cape and Islands secondary schools as well as on the link below.

Harassment, isolation, and lack of support for LGBT students is a major concern of PFLAG. The Massachusetts Youth Risk Behavior Survey shows that high school students who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender are more likely to miss school, feel unsafe, and even consider suicide due to harassment fears. Other surveys show that students hear the word “gay” as a general negative close to ninety times a day, and this is compounded when teachers and administrators fail to respond.

PFLAG sponsors a "Safe Schools" program available to all Cape schools. On invitation, members of the local PFLAG chapter will visit classrooms for discussions concerning diversity and respect. PFLAG would like especially to thank the Falmouth and Bourne High Schools for making these sessions available to their students.

PFLAG is the nation's foremost family-based organization committed to the civil rights of gays, lesbians, and transgender persons. Founded in 1973 by mothers and fathers, PFLAG has 200,000 members in more than 500 chapters throughout the United States.
